Research and Planning - double page spread analysis

This double page spread is from a pop magazine, I chose to analyze this genre because I am thinking of creating a pop music magazine. The target audience for this is teenage girls as the article is about one direction and there main fan base is teenage girls. The layout of the double page spread is that the text fits around the pictures and the main parts of the text are repeated very large to make them stand out to attract the audience to want to read the article to find out more about it. The colours used are Blue, green, grey and white which aren't the most appealing colours to girls which suggests it has a masculine side to the page but as the colours are quite dull it makes the images of the people stand out more. The shot types used are mid shots as it only shows the top part of their body, I think they used mid shots so you can still clearly see who it is but it also fits in well with how the text is laid out.

Research and Planning - Contents page analysis

This is a picture of a contents page from top of the pops magazine. I chose to do my analysis on this magazine because the genre is pop and I am thinking about doing a pop music magazine myself. The target audience for this magazine is probably female teenagers aged about 12-17, I think this because it has an image of Justin Bieber on it which will attract lots of teenage girls around this age group. I think the layout of the contents page is good because its sorted into different categories to make things easier to find for example if you wanted to look for the competitions you would look in the box that says 'Wins and offers' and find the pages that have competitions on. Also it includes pictures to give you an idea of what's included in the magazine. I think the magazine is represented to attract a young female audience and to do this it includes quite a bit of pink as pink is seen as a more feminine  colour. Also it includes pictures of boys which suggests it's to attract a female audience. On the contents page there is a medium close up shot used to show part of the boys body which will attract the female audience to find out more about him and see if there are more images. Also it includes an image of what the front looks like, also it tells you what pages the features on the front are on, I think its set out like this because the coverlines/images on the front are what has attracted the audience to get the magazine so it needs to clearly tell them where about in the magazine they are featured.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Masthead Designs

I think these fonts are suitable for my music magazine because they will appeal more to the younger audience. They also fit in well with the genre which is pop/RnB. I especially think that the first one is suitable for the genre pop because its quite similar to fonts used already on pop magazines. The second font is made from stars which i think is suitable as my music magazine will be about stars. The third font is quite simple but posh at the same time but i think it will still appeal.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Analysis 2

The Genre of this magazine called vibe is RnB/ Hip Hop, I can tell this because it has a picture of Kanye West on the front and his genre of music is usually hip hop.
This magazine is probably aimed at an audience of teenagers/ young adults as it looks quite grown up compared to some teenage magazines but it has lots of celebrity gossip in it that teens would be interested in.
The layout of the magazine could be better as the masthead is hidden behind the image of the man so it doesnt stand out as much, even though its big and in a bright blue colour. The cover lines are in different colours and some are very small compared to others which won't attract the audience as much. Also there seems to be quite a few empty gaps where there could have been more coverlines or something. The shot type is a medium close up i know this because you can see part of his body as well as his head. The colours used on the cover are Blue, Grey, Black and Pink which isnt sticking to the three colour rule, However the text is done in three different colours.
The representation of the cover is alright but it looks like it needs more coverlines or pictures on it to fill in all the gaps or they could make the coverlines they already have a bit bigger. Also they could put the issue number and date on it so people know what order to buy them in if they collect them all.

Research and Planning - Music Magazine Analysis

This Top of the Pops Magazine is based on pop music, I can tell this because it has the word pop in the masthead. Also some of the images on the cover are of artists thats genre is pop.
The audience for this magazine is the younger people most likely teenagers and probably girls, I know this because it has lots of celebrity gossip in it and stuff that yonger people are most likely to be interested in, also there's a lot of pink used on the cover which suggests it appeals more to girls.
The masthead is big at the top of the magazine to make it stand out more to the audience and attract them to it. Its also in a bright pink but as there is a lot of pink in the page it stands out less than it could. The font for the masthead is pretty simple except the 'of the' in a circle which makes it a bit different to other fonts and also the 'S' at the end of pops has a swirly bit on it so its not all in a simple font. The coverlines are spread out all over the cover inbetween the images, they are in different colours and fonts and different sizes, this is probably to make it look different and less boring. Also the more important coverlines will get to stand out more which may encourage the audience to buy the magazine. The main shot type is a medium long shot as you can see part of their legs, Also there are two other medium long shots on the cover page at the bottom. It also includes two close up shots and a medium close up shot. The colours used are pink, blue, black, white and purple which means it isn't sticking to the three colour rule but it still looks really good.
The magazine is represented really well it includes a barcode, the issue number and date and also how much it costs. It also includes the main things in the coverlines with some pictures to attract the audience.

Research and Planning - Collages

This collage is made up of some of my favourite artists. The theme of it is mostly pop but includes a few artists that do other genres aswell for example Drake does R&B and Hip Hop. The collage represents me as its the artists I listen to on a daily basis.

However this collage includes some artists that I dont usually listen to but fit into the genres Pop, hip hop and R&B so I decided to create a second collage to show what others might like so it gives me a better idea for my music magazine.
